do NOT buy a pelican. they're made of cheap plastic and will fall apart on you. waste of money.

for 2 adults and 1 child, i'd recommend the Guide 147 by Old Town. I paid about $500 after tax, new, and it's great. comfortable seats, stable, very tough and easy to handle. it only has 2 seats, but you can buy a drop in seat for the kid, or have him sit on an ice chest, stadium seat, etc.

Academy sells them for about $475.

Thanks a lot Newanderthal. I will definitely right that down and we will look into the one by Old Town. Thanks for providing the link as well!

no problem. I've done a lot of research before my purchase, so the info is still fresh in my mind. If you have any other questions, let me know.

I would suggest the Old Town Penobscot - it'll carry the weight, works great on rivers, and lakes, and can handle up to easy Class III. It's a bit heavy, but still manageable for portages....

I would vote for the Old town Guide 147...my wife & i bought one a year ago and have been out in it 15 times this year. it is stable, roomy enough with 2 seats and plenty of room for our gear...my brother in law & his wife got an Old Towne OP..which is wider & flater on the bottom...with a little more room & 3 seats....they are both the lightest in their class at about 90 lbs.. I hope this helps.

Besides canoes - consider PFD's. If you can find a dealer, I would suggest Seda's. For paddles wood is best, either ash, or cherry, with either a beaver tail, or otter tail blade...

3ofusnow, I have a 17 foot Grumman aluminum I would gladly give to you. It's a great canoe and I have taken it everywhere, at least in the U.S. It was my dad's and then mine after him.

I'm getting to old to use it. My fishing buddy isn't too good with a canoe so I'm going to buy a boat. The problem, of course, is that you are in Georgia, and I'm in Indiana. Anyone else who's interested, or you if you want to come this far to get it, can have it.

Get a We no nah canoe catalog and read the design primer. I think you can also do this on line.

I have to vote for an Old Town too. They make some great canoes.
