Default Barbeque marinade ingredients?

I need help with making ingredients for barbeque marinade before grilling the meat over the fire. I tried making my own marinade a few times but I don't even get the "BBQ" taste on the grilled meat. What do you put in your marinade if you're in the mood for a barbeque session?

I love buying chicken bbq dinners, but can never seem to make the same tasting chicken on my own. My son insists that if you are cooking chicken, you need to soak it in salt water for 1 hour before adding any spices to it. He did make our last bbq and it was great!

Here is a recipe that I ususally use for a bbq.
Basic Tomato BBQ Sauce
1 regular can of tomato sauce
1 can of tomato paste
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 cloves garlic, crushed
4 tablespoons onion, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon cayenne
fresh ground pepper to taste
Cook
the garlic and onion until it's soft, and then add all the rest of the ingredients. Simmer on low for 20-30 minutes. Keep stirring it often so it doesn't burn, then refrigerate for a few days before you use it. This allows the flavors to blend and mellow.

Hello camp1, thank you for the awesome recipe! The dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce and cayenne is missing on my list, they must be responsibly good at making the meat taste like barbeque. Thanks again for sharing it.
