You can do all sort of things with it. What you are doing with one is removing the water, which makes the food last longer. There may be more too it, that helps the food last longer, but that is a very simple version.
Dehydrating food helps with the weight. You can rehydrate the food if needed. a 1-pound 5-ounce can of fruit cocktail when dried reduces to 3 ounces. a 13-ounce can of cream soup reduces to 3 ounces dried. A 1-pound 9-ounce jar of spaghetti sauce when dried reduces to 3 ounces. So there is a great weight gain when you dehydrate the food.
I've been doing things like fruit roll ups, or leathers as they are called. Basically I mix some fruit, yogurt and milk together, place it on the leather sheet (they are actually a plastic sheet) that is lightly oiled and dehydrate it. It comes out like the fruit roll ups you can buy in a store. The exception is, they taste so much better. There is also less preservatives then the store bought ones, and less sugar.
Another thing I love is dehydrated banana's. In fact I love them so much wal-mart had them for $0.39 a pound and we got about 20 banana's. All except what the kid had will be dehydrated. I may even go back and pick more up. Once dehydrated they last longer. They taste so much better then the store. They are chewy, and taste sweeter. I do not add anything to them, I just slice them about a quarter inch size slices and put them on the dehydrator for a few hours, usually around 8.
