Default Do you change up your food with the season?

In the summer when we go camping we take a lot of salads to go along with our meals. We make them at home and they are refreshing on the hot days.

In the Fall we take more warm meals. For instance a pot of chili, goulash, macaroni and cheese in the crock-pot.

Do you change up your meals when you camp during the different season?

Well, for the wedding we got a dehydrator and some canning stuff. I've been playing with the dehydrator the past week or so (plan to post some recipes soon), and I could see myself buying seasonal products and then either canning them or dehydrating them. As it stands though, I do eat things like chili more when it is colder out, and lighter things when it is warmer.

I've never used a dehydrater and I'm not sure I would like the food once it's been dehydrated. What kinds of things will you do that to?
We are having chili today! Not camping though--- snowing here now!

I'm a sissy - I only go camping when it's warm out so I only stick to the cooler foods. We usually have a lot of fish because we try to eat what we catch while we're out but we always take salad fixings and fruit.

You can do all sort of things with it. What you are doing with one is removing the water, which makes the food last longer. There may be more too it, that helps the food last longer, but that is a very simple version.

Dehydrating food helps with the weight. You can rehydrate the food if needed. a 1-pound 5-ounce can of fruit cocktail when dried reduces to 3 ounces. a 13-ounce can of cream soup reduces to 3 ounces dried. A 1-pound 9-ounce jar of spaghetti sauce when dried reduces to 3 ounces. So there is a great weight gain when you dehydrate the food.

I've been doing things like fruit roll ups, or leathers as they are called. Basically I mix some fruit, yogurt and milk together, place it on the leather sheet (they are actually a plastic sheet) that is lightly oiled and dehydrate it. It comes out like the fruit roll ups you can buy in a store. The exception is, they taste so much better. There is also less preservatives then the store bought ones, and less sugar.

Another thing I love is dehydrated banana's. In fact I love them so much wal-mart had them for $0.39 a pound and we got about 20 banana's. All except what the kid had will be dehydrated. I may even go back and pick more up. Once dehydrated they last longer. They taste so much better then the store. They are chewy, and taste sweeter. I do not add anything to them, I just slice them about a quarter inch size slices and put them on the dehydrator for a few hours, usually around 8.

Grats on the marriage and yes a dehydrator is a great thing to have, it comes in handy for camping trips and for tricks around the house. When I dated a guy back in high school his mother had one (I have never seen one before) and swore when I got married that was the first thing that was going in my house.

We change it up too. We like to make warmer, feel-good meals when it's chillier outside. We also make sure we keep the campfire going all day when its colder outside.
I want to get a dehydrater, it sounds like something that we would use often.

I don't go camping when it's cold out but when the first cold snap comes I'm in the kitchen making soup or chili! Chili or veggie soup tastes so good when the weather is cold outside with good homemade cornbread. Mmmmmm yummy in the tummy!

It's really required for us to change up our meals when we camp depending on the season. On warm weather we go for cool salads plus fruits loaded with Vitamin C. On cool weather we would go for hot soups and warm sandwiches straight from the grill. Of course, pasta cannot be missed on the food camping list.

Definitely we switch up our meal during the different seasons. In the summer it is usually burgers, chicken, hot dogs with chips, salads and fruits. In the colder months it is always soups and chili. Something to warm the bones.
