Which do you prefer? It's been my experience that different regions of the country favor one or the other. We normally season all our meat pretty heavily with different spices (not sure I'd call it a true rub) and let it absorb for a while and then brush on some barbecue sauce while it's on the grill.

I use rubs a lot. I also brine birds, and marinate beef. They are all good, and give off great flavors. It really depends on the mood and what I am going for. I like rubs for getting some spicy heat in the food. Brines are great on birds like turkey and chickens. I get some great flavors from marinating. One of my favorites is a tequila lime marinate for jerky.
This is one area where my husband and I disagree. I love saucy, so give me tons of bbq sauce and I am happy. He likes things dry, so he would rather have the spices.
