Default Grill or campfire?

I've cooked over both and prefer the campfire for most things, like hotdogs. Which do you prefer to use when you camp - a small grill or the campfire?

I like the no clean up a campfire tends to have.

I agree with the no clean up argument! However, I do find that I have lost fewer hot dogs and hamburgers to a grill than to a campfire.

We always opt for the fire when camping. I don't see any need to lug a grill with us when we're going to have to light a fire anyway and it is a perfectly good source of heat. Plus, it seems more traditional to me.

Default My preference is cooking over an open campfire

I agree that there is less clean up involved with cooking over an open campfire but it does take some knowledge of technique and a bit of practice.

The effort required to learn to cook over and open campfire is worth it, not only for the ease of clean up, but for the flavors contributed to foods by cooking them over an open, wood coals campfire. There is nothing quite like it.

Why not have the best of both worlds? Put a grill over the campfire .

In all seriousness I do enjoy both, but I prefer to grill at home and cook by campfire when I'm camping.

I enjoy both too. I tend to burn things on the campfire so it`s more for marshmallows and maybe hot dogs on a stick. My kids love to play with the fire. So it`s a kind of entertainment too. I love to watch the flames. They can be so pretty.

I would rather cook over a grill. This way I have better control over how the food is going to be cooked. We alway throw our grill in the back of the truck when we go camping.

I enjoy the campfire in the evenings to make smores and pies. The kids will make their lunches over the campfire using the pie irons.

The kids like to camp over the campfire and I like the grill. The campfire is fun to cook on, until it gets too hot and the kids lose interest. The grill you have control over, and I don't cook I let the hubby!

We always have both. We use the grill for the majority of the cooking but the campfire is great for marshmallows, hot dogs, and baked potatoes.

We use the campfire to cook most meals except breakfast, we use the grill for that. Unless I get up much earlier than the others and we are staying around the campsite for a while so we don't leave with a fire burning.
