Default Grilled mac n cheese

I was watching one of Bobby Flay's shows the other day and he had a viewer/guest on who was cooking macaroni and cheese on the grill. She said she came up with the idea a few years ago when her part of the country was hit by a hurricane and they had no power for several weeks. It's an interesting concept and it made me think of experimenting with different casseroles to see if they would benefit from being cooked on a smokey grill.

Sounds interesting enough. Was she just boiling the water and cooking noodles that type of thing? or making a casserole on the campfire? I would think that you would have stir the mac and cheese often or it would scorch.?

It would probably work okay as a casserole if you just built the fire to one side and placed the casserole pan on the other. That's how we usually cook pork roasts and things like that.

Mac and cheese on the grill! OMG. My kids would love this. I bet homemade mac and cheese (not just that box stuff) would be even better. Add some smokey ham.... Mmmmm... I am thinking about dinner... lol

My wife had a lot of good noodle casseroles that could be cooked like that. She would just throw the noodles, water and the rest of the ingredients in and allow it to slowly cook. They were great.

Unfortunately, I didn't see the whole show so I missed the technique. It was clearly made from scratch so I'm thinking she may have constructed it like a regular macaroni and cheese casserole wherein she cooked the noodles first and then assembled everything. And Southerngal, you're probably right about using indirect heat. When all was said and done it looked like a great dish where the cheese on top was slightly browned around the edges and all bubbly, but I would think that if she cooked it over direct heat the noodles on the bottom would end up blackened, lol.

It sounds interesting. So you boil the water and cook it right on the grill like you would on the stove? I wonder if it has a different flavor. If you try it, let us know.

It is possible to do on a BBQ but it does taste a little different. I have done this in my "not so stable" days right out of school and it was okay but if I had to do it again, I wouldn't.

Noodles plus cheese is always good no matter how you cook it. Especially for kids and college students! Easy and delicious. I'll have to go to his site and watch this one. I think you can watch his shows on his site now.

Now that is an interesting dish. I went to Google and found a recipe! Go to the Food Network site and put Grilled Mac N Cheese in their search box. Sounds yummy!
