How well do you eat when you are away? If I am honest I don't really do all that well-I try and feed the crowd well but its a lot of dehydrated stuff.

Other than the first night when I can carry fresh stuff, how do I manage to carry better food with me?

I carry fruit that can last a few days. I carry rice which can be cooked pretty fine into a good meal. There's a few tips for you.

What about dehydrated foods, I am sure you could make all types of filling snacks that could last a few days. I have never done this (other than store bought) myself but it might be possible.

I have found that I have a much better experience if I fuel myself with decent food when camping. We will usually prepare some raw veggies and fruit ahead of time for snacks and meals. It is much better for keeping the energy up, does not bloat and bog you down like a fat steak, or smokies, hot dogs, hamburgers etc. It also allows brown-time to be less frequent - if you catch my drift. We also try and avoid the really sugary snacks. Nothing like crashing from a sugar buzz when it's your turn to split some wood

Don't get me wrong, we eat our share of bad food camping too, but we do bring along healthy stuff. We eat a lot of chicken and fish. Sometimes we will prepare a meal and take it with us for the first night so we can concentrate on setting up, or exploring or whatever instead of taking time out to whomp up a mess 'O vittles. More time for play.

It always surprised me how many people will do better prep work for a camping trip than home cooking. We are like this to a point but in the last year (after much determination) we are finally making a change getting out of the lazy habit of home foods.

Our camping trips are usually only 3 to 4 days and we usually have one decent meal a day. We freeze the meat, burgers, chicken, steak, before we come and leave it in the cooler until we're ready. With the short stay, we haven't had any issues.

We also bring a good batch of chili that we freeze and heat up. It's great as a meal, or a side.
