It sounds like a good idea, but I would think that I would have to let my mind wander a bit also, so I don't actively think about where I'm going. That's one of the main reasons people get lost isn't it?

You make a good point there Jimbo. You are correct - people get lost when they are not paying proper attention.

I'm with Newanderthal - I am more interested in what's over that ridge than what is directly adjacent to the trail, so I tend to randomly leave the trail often, but I make sure I am paying attention.

Interestingly, I rarely get confused outdoors, but I can get turned around in a big shopping mall and seriously need a map to get back out

While out hiking around I have purposely wandered off not paying attention to when I'm heading. Then pulled out my map and compass to try and get my bearings again. It's good training and fun!
