Default Pocket survival kit

Do any of you carry a pocket survival kit? I ran across some videos on youtube and a lot of people make their own and carry them everyday. They usually consist of a compass, firestarter, and first aid supplies. Some people are really ingenius at how they make things "pocket sized".

While I admit that even on a short day hike or even a trip to the beach, I toss a few "survival" items into my bag (my wife jokingly picks on me) ... it would be a little over-the-top to carry such items every day. I live in a quite urban area, and my commute to work is 1.1 miles.

Well being that I live out in the "boonies" something like this would actually be feasible for me. I am going to check it out, something like this would be good to put in the car too except maybe add a few things like a blanket.

I carry a little kit at times that has a compass, flint rod, bic lighter, small flashlight, a folding knife and a few band aids in it.

I have one in my car that is fairly heavy duty and I have a little pocket thing that is built into a whistle. It has a compass on the top, a small mirror, and a few first aid essentials. It lives on me always.

I live out in the boonies too. I'm pretty much a survival kit myself! I do carry a leatherman with me all of the time so I have something that I could make do with. You can always braid a fairly sturdy rope out of vines, especially if they're green. The only thing I don't have is a way to start fire but you can do that with a little fuzz, a rock, a stick and a shoestring.

If you have to survive something you can get pretty ingenious if you have to. The only thing is, if you are injured, it can be difficult.

Some of the ones I saw (on youtube) even included straws that were sealed at each end with a lighter that contained bleach (to make water drinkable) and neosporin for first aid needs. I thought that was pretty cool!

I have a much different philosophy on survival kits.

Though I do appreciate and admire the ingenuity of some of these micro kits, for my own piece of mind, my own survival kit is pretty comprehensive, weighs about 2 lbs (ish) and lives in my daily carry backpack. Its' purpose is to preserve life, so it is built with that in mind. It can also be worn on my belt and is around the size of a military canteen.

The true test of a kit is to take it out by itself, field test it in a mock survival scenario and see how it meets the needs of shelter, water, fire, food, and first aid.

As far as bare essentials go for a pocket carry, a fire-steel and knife are 2 things I am never without. Even at the mall lol.
