Not a kit so much but I do keep two extra knives with us on the longer trips just in case one ends up getting lost. I would rather have a few extra than none at all.

I always have some survival stuff on me.

I have a pocket knife that I never leave home without. Also in my pockets are some band aids, a lighter, LED flashlight, a magnesium fire starter, and some safety pins.

There are also some items in my pack. These include:

emergency blanket
rain poncho
first aid kit
sun block
Swiss army knife
strike anywhere matches (in plastic)
a small sharpening stone
water purification chemicals
a backup flashlight (with some extra batteries)
insect repellent
compass
hand sanitizer
mess head-net
a liter container of water
Mora knife

If I were wearing BDUs, I suppose I could fit all that in my pockets. But I prefer to keep it in the pack because it's more comfortable there.

Leatherman, fire starter(s), woodsmans pal if I am going deep, extra layers of clothes(can be super thin and light silk long johns and a raincoat)water, at least 2 pints, water purifier(can be a tin cup to go over a fire or iodine pills or a filter) 2-3 knives, a sharpener. Gloves, hat. tarp or space blanket(don't get one of the cheap ones). 2 headlamps.

I carry a backpack when I go out, llol. My wife wants me to get a belt pack and stay with that. Way lighter and smaller.

I have a small kit strapped to my knife sheath that has some of the basic items Cody Lundin covered in his first book, "98.7 Degrees, How to keep you ass alive" . I have yet to take it out and put it to the test.

Found a great book with tons of ideas! "Build the perfect survival kit" by John D. McCann, Krause publications. Well thought out and full of good info, Will be making changes to some of my ideas after reading this.

I keep one of these in my pocket all of the time.SL3 FireSteel Survival Kit | Folding Knife | Built-in Fire Starter | Blade | Emergency Whistle | Light My Fire USA

Whistle, knife, firesteel. I have also gotten into the habit of making tinder bundles on the trail. Any time I see something dry and easily accessible it goes in a pocket until I think I have enough to start a fire or I find something better to replace it with.

On casual strolls I will sit down and practice starting the fire by igniting the tinder bundle and using it to light a cigar. Making fire takes practice.

The wife accuses me of "picking flowers".

I don't know about "pocket-sized", but I do always make sure that I have the bare necessities. I always try to carry a minimum, to keep my load light, but you have always got to make sure you have a First Aid kit.
