I want to venture out into the mountains here in northern Az. around October, and was wondering if anyone could recommend some good hiking gear? I want to be roughing it tent free for about 3 days.

This may be a question best answered by local outfitters or S.A.R. with some experience in the environment you will be entering. My first concern in any mountain environment is exposure and hypothermia, especially in October.

Can you be a little more specific about what your needs are? It is such a wide open question that some details on the type of gear you are in need of would help. Boots, pack, poles, stoves, bivy, beacon etc.

Will you be traveling with others or traveling alone? Will you trek a long distance with your gear or hike heavy elevation gains?

I would recommend some extra warm clothing at the very least. Stock up on the fire starting equipment and pay attention to the burn conditions if you're going onto Federal land.

At the very lest I would take my bare minimums for a trip where I might be caught out, a knife that will split wood , a lighter and magnesium fire starter, a roll of plastic sheeting like the 10' by 12' kind u can get in the paint dept at Wally world, a stainless steel bottle u could put on the coals and boil water in if need be, and at least 25-100 feet of paracord. These items have got me thru the night comfortably a few times I went light.. After that it's a matter of comfort items vs, weight, like what food and water u might want or items for warmth.. Also if u don't know the terrain u def need a map and compass.. It's good to figure out what the basic needs are and figure out the fewest items that will cover them so u can always have them in a small bag and keep them with u, because aside from that core kit, u will always forget something u wanted or needed, but as long as u have your essentials kit u can make do.

Path closing in, although still nicer then some stuff we ended up going through. Lots of spider webs, thankfully I had my walking stick.
