| I used to use fiberglass because that always just happened to be the poles that came with the tents I bought. My new tent, however, has aluminum poles. But that didn't weigh heavily in my decision. I never once had a problem with fiberglass poles ... and I've done a lot of camping. I've heard they can be come brittle in cold weather ... but I've camped in the snow, and nothing. The aluminum poles are much lighter, and will probably make a difference when I hike in. But I don't think the poles should be the main focus of a tent search. Pick the tent that's going to meet your needs, and just use the poles that come with the tent.
