To me it means getting rid of any excess weight that you can and still having what you need. I love cast iron, but I won't carry it on my back. I'll take aluminum, or better yet, titanium. I like the extra room in a rectangular sleeping bag, but I'll save a couple pounds by taking a mummy bag. When the black flies and mosquito's aren't a problem, I'll take a tarp instead of a tent and on and on. When you're using some means of transportation other than your back, weight isn't much of an issue. When you're back packing, any weight you can leave behind is a blessing.
