I just got a boxer puppy and have allowed her to go on some short hikes with me. So far, she has been keeping up pretty well. Do you take your dogs hiking with you?

All the time! They love hitting the trails. They start barking and freaking out the closer I get to the park entrance. Lucky is 10 or 11, Bandit is 5. Both beagles and both rescued from 2 different SPCA. (animal shelters) Don't forget to bring water and treats for your pup.
I used to backpack with my dog all the time. I'd keep him on his leash, and use a climbing clip to tether the leash to my belt. He did a great job of staying in front, and I had my hands free. We only did that on-trail, though. If we went off trail, I'd hold his leash in my hand so I could let go if I ever needed to ... never needed to, though.
I just got a new dog myself and can't wait to hit the trails with him! I don't go often, but I'm hoping he'll love it as much as I do. There's a great hike down to a beach where I live - could be a win/win situation.
I keep her very close right now since she is still so young, but I hope as she gets older I will be able to let her run a little more freely. I do make sure to bring plenty of water and food for her!
It depends on where I am going, if it is just a local hike then yes I do but if it is somewhere I have not gone before I don't because it is too much of a distraction. He does love going though!
