Where is the best place to start hiking on the Appalachian trail?

I am planning a 5 day unsupported trip with a freind. We are looking for the best place to start hiking in the northeast. Anyone have any favorite spots they liked?

I've been told that the two following places are nice.

Route 7 at Weather Mountain

or

Route 340 at the VA/WV border.

I was told to stay away from the shelters they have on AT. They are close to the highway and kids like to use them to party.

I can't recommend a place to *start* but you'll be lucky, I think, if your part of the trail crosses the Skyline Drive area of VA. It is sooooo pretty up there and I finally got to see it a few years ago. The first time it was too foggy and I actually got STUCK up there sleeping in a car with two friends because you couldn't see half an inch in front of your face.
