Default Backpack frames

I'm a small framed woman and I struggle with a pack. I was thinking of getting one of those frames to help break the load. Does anyone use one and do they really make much of a difference?

I believe a frame would be a worthy investment for you. My wife has a lightweight aluminum one and it helps distribute the load more evenly. She said that the same pack with the frame feels 10 pounds lighter.

a regular pack pulls back on your shoulders and can damage your spine if you carry a load for an extended period of time. A frame pack transfers most of the weight to your hips. A 50lb load in a frame pack feels like a 15lb load in a non-frame pack.

The pack must be the right size and properly adjusted to work. If it is, you will never backpack with anything else again. You should only use a frame pack when carrying any significant load.

Go to a real outfitting store (like REI) and get them to measure your torso and make some recommendations. You don't have to buy from them, but you'll at least know what you're looking for.

I agree with the Indiana Hiker. And REI is a great pkace to shop. Their gear will appear to be a bit pricey but I have been an REI member for 18 years and have yet to replace anything I have purchased. Their stuff lasts.

dicks sporting goods(kentucky area) has a external frame pack that is adjustable to fit even my 12 daughter. it is made by jansport and carries everything she needs. I like a plastic frame myself. I have an old back injury that required surgury to correct, the plastic frame allows movement( the frame flexes) and cuts down the weight. I carry about 50 pounds with it and it is very comfortable.
