I'm thinking about getting a camelbak for hiking. Does anyone here use one that they really like? I've seen several versions and I'm currently trying to pick one.

I use one when on a bike. It works pretty well. My only problem is that I'm a rather large guy, and it can be a pain to put on and take off.

If you go to the Camelbak website, they have a large selection of hydration packs that look like small summit packs. I'm sure you could store much of your gear for a out and back hike in one of them. I have three Camelbaks myself and I love to use them. If you do end up getting one make sure you get the bladder drying kit, this will ensure you don't forget you have water in it and store it in the closet until next hike. The water in there really starts to get rank, if you know what I mean.

I recently bought a cheaper version made by Outdoor Products sold by Walmart. And another one made by Eddie Bauer sold by Target. I haven't tried them out yet, but as soon as I can I will let you know how they worked out. I looked at the camelbaks, very nice but I am on a cheap budget. The ones I bought do have extra storage for keys, wallet, cell phone, camera and food. But not too big. Just enough.

I've been using a Camelbak Rim Runner (approximately 1,400 cubic inch) for several years and it has been a stellar bag. The thing is absolutely bullet-proof, well thought-out, well built.

I've looked at a lot of bags in this size and for my money the Rim Runner is the best for my purposes. I do mainly off-trail wanders in the coastal ranges of Northern California, tough country (not very high, but way steep and unforgiving) that demands a lot from me and my equipment. The bag has to be of sensible design and quality materials; Camelbak has both.

I wouldn't think of using any other like-sized pack. Yep, what I've seen in other bags makes me glad I bought this one. Too many small packs are just a joke, really; too light, too cute, too bright, too weak. Buy a Camelbak you'll never look back.
