Default How Did You Learn To Wilderness Camp?

How did you learn how to survive in the wilderness if you are stranded somewhere? Did you go with a relative or did you just wing it? I learned how to wilderness camp with my Mom and Dad when I was a child. I know a lot of the plants in the area where I grew up and we would camp out for our vacation every year. So how did you learn?

To be honest, and this was probably quite stupid, but I just took off on week, went to a national park and did it.

Now, I'd been camping -- and camping alone -- for years before that. But, I just wanted to have a go at it.

On that trip, I always knew where I was. Always knew exactly how to get back to my car, and always knew where the areas of danger were. So, it wasn't like "real" survival, but it wasn't a bad trial run, either.

I'm not sure how prepared I'd be if I was forced to survive off the land for any length of time. I haven't fully tested myself. I have learned quite a bit about what I can eat or not, how to avoid dangerous animals, tracking and creating or finding shelter. I'm self taught, mostly, as I've always had an interest. I've just never put it to a real test.

I have never camped alone so I doubt that would be an option I would like (neither would by spouse being left home with kids alone).

Are there any decent reading books that could help?

Necessity is the mother of all invention, in other words if you need something bad enough (food, water, shelter) you will find a way to get it.

I have been learning to survive all my life (I say learning because I think there is always something that you don't know). As a kid me and my friend would go out and figure out how to find worms and grubs, a skill that came in handy when I got lost in the woods with no food some time ago.

I learned surviving through nature by watching Man VS Wild by Bear Grills. The surviving skills that Bear are portraying are really useful. I apply some of the tips from that show when I'm out camping or hiking.

I learned surviving in the wild when I was still young. My parents love camping and we often go for a survival camping. My father would teach me how to use what nature provides in order to survive in the wild. My mother on the other hand teaches me on how to cook camp foods.

My father and uncle taught me how back when I was a little boy. We all shared passion for camping and that is how I learned all the stuff.
