Default Less smoke

How do I make a camp fire with little or no smoke? What is the secret of creating a smokeless fire aside from using charcoal?

About the only way I know of to reduce smoke, is to burn good dry hardwoods. Once they're burned down to coals, you have about the closest thing to a smokeless fire that I know of. Building your fire against a rock, or other backstop, if permissible, will usually funnel most of the smoke up and away from you.

Those are some good tips. I love campfires, but I can't stand the smoke. I hate it when the wind changes direction and I have to keep running around trying to get away from the smoke.

Make sure the wood is dry. Wet wood will give off a lot of smoke. And make sure the fire is hot while adding more wood slowly.
