| About the only way I know of to reduce smoke, is to burn good dry hardwoods. Once they're burned down to coals, you have about the closest thing to a smokeless fire that I know of. Building your fire against a rock, or other backstop, if permissible, will usually funnel most of the smoke up and away from you.
