Default Movies on the Drive

When I was growing up, the drive to the camping ground was part of the trip - we'd play games to stay entertained and look out the window to see the city slowly give way to suburbia and then good old nature...

But now, with tv screens built into cars, I see more and more families just letting their kids be hypnotised by movies for the drive. Do you/would you do this? Is the younger generation THAT unable to enjoy an experience that's not either hands-on or on a screen?

I guess we grew up in a different era. I still play games while on drives. The alphabet game. Start with the letter A find it along the drive (on a sign, on a license plate, etc.) Then the letter B and so on. I am willing to bet that some kids now a days could be driven 2 miles away from home and not know how to get back. It seems like they are missing out on so much.

I admit I spoiled my kid with a dvd system in the car. It also spoils me. We use it on long trips. Short trips I play children music for her, and she will even sing along.

It depends on how far we are going. We will often play games on the way (license plate game, etc.) then after a while we will toss a movie in to watch. It passes the time quick.

Yes, I remember those long car rides. I also remember my father telling us if he had to pull the car over we were all "gonna get it!" I never have really enjoyed getting there. I would appreciate the occasional scenery change, or local site, but mostly, I was an "are we there yet" kid. So I truly appeciate our DVD player in our vehicle.

In a long trip, I think it's the way to go. I haven't had my own family yet, but it's what I, my brother and his family usually do when we are on the way to camp.
