Of course there is another more complicated method that will eliminate most metals, germs and dirt from water. Its the evaporation method. You need an open metal container, like a kettle to boil the water, some sort of clean flat surface, I think a small rectangular mirror would do best and a container to catch the water, like a thermos or canteen.
Rig the mirror at about a 45 degree angle about 3-5 inches above the kettle opening of the kettle before the water starts boiling. When the water evaporates it will leave behind any metals or dirt in the kettle and kill any germs in the water. The evaporated water will condensate on the mirror and the angle will cause the water droplets to run into the canteen.
Sure there are easier ways to purify water, but they are not a gratifying  .
