Default I hate the new bikes!

I so wish I would have kept my older bike from when I was a teenager! I hate these new bikes with all the speeds. Like I'm supposed to know when to change speed or gear. I swear I get so tired trying to peddle on flat land let alone up a hill because I have the wrong speed or gear!

Haha! I guess it just takes some getting used to. I personally enjoy having the different speeds and gears, makes the ride a little easier.

I kinda agree to both. I liked my old 10 speed. Now I have a 21? speed. I don't need all those gears. 10 where more than enough. But 1 speed was not enough. Hummm maybe a 3 speed would be good?

I would love to go back to the 10 speed- I remember how to use though. This new bike has low/medium/high and then a ton of speeds! It's crazy- I hope I can get used to it.

I'll never give up my old bike because it was a gift from my grandfather. I've been using this bike for how many years. It may not look nicer compared to the new ones but it's very convenient to use. I have no plans to change my old bike. Never!

I don't think that it is any different than knowing when you need to change gear in a car. When you are 'over revving' you need to change up. High gears are great for high speeds but you need the low gears for getting started.

You are absolutely right. I do not see the purpose of so many gears for the average mountain biker. It makes absolutely no sense, it is almost as though I avoid these bikes specifically when I am searching for a new bike.

Wow. I didn't know that there were so many gears in a bike! (Obviously I am not an enthusiast.) I had an ex boyfriend who biked to work. I never tinkered with his bike though. You mean there are no more bikes like the ones we grew up with? Really simple ONE-GEAR ones?

What I find is a great way to get people to understand how to use the gears is; try to keep your peddle speed the same. This means, when you start peddling really fast then you need to shift into a higher gear. If your peddle speed starts to slow down, then shift down into an easier gear. Try this for a while using just one of the front sprockets, when you get the hang of it you can incorporate the other front sprockets into the equation.

It seems like they're always trying to make everything as easy as it can be. More than 10 gears seems like a waste to me. I'll keep my 10-speed and get it worked on when it needs it until I die if I can. Does anyone use more than 10 speeds?
