Default Fish Finders

So as I sit here looking at what toys I'm going to order with my kayak, I keep seeing a lot of people say fish finder. I have never used them before, and almost feel like it is cheating. So who uses them, and how useful do you find them?

For kayaking I don't use a fishfinder, as I can go where no powerboat can go. Skinny water that is.
