    Trout advice

Isn't a slip sinker in front of a swivel essentially a Carolina Rig? Of course you aren't going to use a 3/4 oz slip sinker as when you are going for bass. 1/8 oz or less for trout. I've had horrible results with flurocarbon on spinning reels (assuming that is what you are using). Tangle...

    Power to a camp site

That MotorMaster 800 is really expensive and the reviews on Amazon are terrible. I have on that was 1/4 of the price and does the job reasonably well. I think Mac's method above with the solar charger combo might be the best way to go, es pecially if you are going out for more than a few days.

What Kind of Flashlight/Lantern Do You Use?

I have a Black Diamond head lamp that I like a lot. Bright, long battery life, multiple brightness settings and not too bulky. My go to hand held is a Fenix LD22. It's a good combination of brightness (300 lumens) weight, size and price (under $50). For lanterns I have a Black Diamond Orbit and...

Do You Bring Booze on your Backpacking Trips?

I nearly always bring beer, a can or two per night. Something that tastes good warm. Dales Pale Ale is a favorite camping beer. Sometimes a half pint of Bushmills or Jameson in a flask. Occasionally red wine. It goes in a spring water bottle because it doesn't impart any taste, is light...

Google "Street View" on the Trail?

I'm a member of a fishing forum focused on my state. I always found it strange how in a supposed fishing forum, everyone is so tight lipped about where they fish. Any discussion of a location is usually done via PM, or using code words that only veteran forum members seem to know. Some go as...

    Sealing a Leaky Tent Question

You can try a good paint on water repellent coating and see how that works. I don't think a spray will cut it for a tent floor. Also re-seal all of the seams on your tent with a seam sealer. Water may be dripping unnoticed from the seams and not coming through the floor. I don't think the...

    Bugs

Try 3M Ultrathon (DEET). The cream stays on even with lots of sweat. The spray is good too, but the cream is the best repellent I've ever used.

    Bugs

Permethrin works well on clothing. It will keep the ticks off and keep the skeeters from biting through your clothing, but it won't keep the insects off your arms and face. The best combination is DEET on your skin and permethrin on your clothing.

    Backpacking and animals

I've never done it, but there are guided backpacking trips, usually out west, that use pack animals.

Anyone know what kind of snake this is?

    Definitely a worm snake

    How old is your tent?

Of the tents I currently own, my Walrus 6 person tent was bought in 1995, making it 21 years old. My Walrus 4 person was bought a year later. I have a LL Bean 2 person dome tent bought in 1990, a Mountainsmith solo tent bought in 2006, a Sierra Designs 2 person bought in 2010 and a Warbonnet...

Coleman evenston 4 person screened tent

I would beware of a Coleman tent. Basically you get what you pay for. I went camping with a friend last summer who was quite proud of his brand new Coleman tent. We had a deluge during the the weekend and the next day he was cursing the tent and drying out his sleeping bag and clothing...

    Coleman

Coleman products have a long history in the outdoors world. They do some things well. Their stoves and lanterns are proven winners for certain types of camping. Tents and canoes, not so much.

    eels

The few times I've caught eels was in waters where eating them (or any fish) wasn't a good idea. Otherwise they can be quite good to eat.
