Love the water but cannot swim

It's never too late to take lessons you know. Water safety is so important, I would think that it would be a worthwhile investment in both time and money.

    Old style tent

Oh I hated the old style tents. I was so happy once I got my first easy erect tents, and I started going out far more often once it wasn't such a chore putting the tent up and packing it.

    Dehydrators

How much weight can you conceivably save compared to carrying fresh? And how long does the dried food last for, presumably storage is pretty simple once dehydrated?

    Cooking Fish

I leave the head on. I remove it before I eat because I don't like it looking back at me, but I was always taught to cook it whole and do whatever you need to afterwards.

    What type of backpack

Nice pack. Watch the positioning of the chest strap though. I find that it causes it to rub my armpits. It's not too tight, just the way I'm built, so I rarely get on with them-hopefully you will.

    More Food

I've shopped on the way in the past, but it somehow doesn't seem right to cut out in the middle of a trip to go shopping. Seems too much like normal life.

    Dehydrators

Do you have a smoker, or a dehydrator? If so, how adventurous are you with it, and what of the more experimental foods have you dried?

    Feral Cats

I doubt the 'sense' you-they probably simply smell you. I second the traps, or else you will need to work on ramping up your defences against the little blighters.

    Highest Altitude?

Nowhere near that high I'm afraid. I've only hiked to 3,500 miles, but still the view was stunning. Well worth the effort, even if I did lose my cap when the wind blew.

    Camping Without Hiking

I've always been a hiker. We pitched camp, and hiked to a new site the next day. If you don't hike, then how do you occupy your time? I need to cut out the hiking a little, but don't want to lose the camping.

    Increasing Cramps

I understand that calcium (or lack thereof) can cause problems too, as it interferes with the relay of nerve impulses. Either way, it looks like you have a few things to try now.

    Cookware Metals?

I have some mess tins that I still use, and otherwise most of what I use to eat from is enamel. I cook in stainless steel, because I dislike aluminium.

    Packing Tips

How do you manage to take along all of the stuff that you need, in a pack that is small enough for you to manage? Do you just leave stuff behind?

    Attacked By Bees

I was volunteering at a local school, supervising a hike. One of the kids stepped on a nest, and a number from the group were attacked and stung. One poor girl-six years old got stung sixteen times, and another twenty four. Both were taken to hospital, and given anti-histamines on the way. We...

    More Food

That's an interesting thought, and I have to wonder why we never considered it before. Do you check before you go what local pollution is like (streams around here I wouldn't dream of fishing)?

    Any Confrontations with Predators?

I once saw someone face to face with a mountain lion. We cleared out and called for help as we were in a park, and our party had kids with us. Pretty scary, but the person was fine, they scared it off.

    Making it More Comfortable

Are you able to take some kind of camping cot? I'd think that would be more comfortable, especially compared to sleeping just on a camping mat on the ground.

    Warmest Tent

There are winter, and four seasons tents that are better suited for cold weather. The ground however will be one of the coldest parts, so you'll need good insulation underneath you.

    More Food

Without storage it's hard to extend camping trips too much. What tricks do you use in order to make your food supplies last longer, and stay fresh?
