    Happy St Paddy's Day

Same to you- a day late of course. Yes we celebrate! We have celebrated since I was a baby. My mom's parents were almost 100% Irish. They are both gone now but we still celebrate. I love this day - spending it with family!

    Why can't I ride a bike?

Practice, practice and more practice is what you need to do. Don't give up and don't let anyone push you faster than you can learn. I bet right now you are just fed up and discouraged. It's a mind over matter thing right now.

    Roasting marshmallows

Good idea, you can even roast them if you have a gas stove in your kitchen. I'm telling you nothing beats a roasted marshmallow on the campfire. I can't wait for summer either!

Another child died in ATV accident...

Young kids should not be riding 4-wheelers or any type of ATV. Most 4-wheelers say on them - no one under 16. I know they have smaller ATV's for kids but I don't think they are safe! How very sad for the loss of this child.

    Cottage or camp

I would love to have a cottage or cabin too. Actually we do own a 1 room cabin but it's on our property so not like camping. We usually camp in our camper but this year we are going to rent a cabin on most trips.

    Survival in Winter vs Summer

I have never taken a winter versus summer survival training course, but it seems pretty obvious. In the summer you have to watch out for bugs and poisonous plants and in the winter you have to protect yourself from the cold and frostbite.

    St. Patty's Day

It's almost St. Patty's day (tomorrow). Do you do anything special? Tell me you at least wear green. We go out as a family to a nice dinner (there are 27 of us going tomorrow). My grandparents were 100% Irish. I'm wearing green tomorrow.

    How is your weather?

It's been raining here all day! I'm excited tomorrow it could reach the mid 50's... that is warm for Mid March. I am so ready for spring! The snowmobiles are already put away!

    Coolers rummaged through

Great tip dinosaur - you know I never thought about bungy cords. We actually bungy cord the cooler when we take it on the 4-wheeler (so it does not pop open on the bumps). Raccoons freak me out!

    Freedom = kids

How much “freedom” do you give to your kids when you are camping? When we are at the campground that we go to the most, the kids (9-14) can pretty much go anywhere during daylight hours. We have a lot of family that camps there too and everyone pretty much keeps an eye out for them. They...

    Meal time planning

Do you and your family plan meal times when you camp? I keep reading all these tips to be sure to pre-plan your meals and the meal times too. We don’t do this ever. I camp with a lot of other people and we just start cooking whenever we feel like it. The kids always check in every few hours.

    More Food

Seriously dinosaur? I don't think you can shoot your gun that close to other people. We take a lot of coolers and then keep buying ice to keep the food frozen or fresh and not spoiled. We have never had any problem yet with it.

    Smokers?

I don't smoke and I don't camp with those that do smoke but it burns me when I see cigarette butts all over the place. A campground is no place to be dropping your smoked up cigarettes. There are kids all over the place and it is not something you want them to put in their mouths.

Take the pooch, or leave it home?

Nope, our pets stay home. We have a neighbor come and check on them and feed them. If we are gone for a week then they go stay at my folks house. I don't like taking them with us, it's just one more thing to have to worry about.

    Horseshoes and camping

We have horseshoe pits in our back yard too. We all love to play shoes so we make it a point to play when we camp too. Camping is all about fun and relaxation and shoes are the way the guys like to relax. I'm good with that!

    Mountain climbing

I don't have any tips for you with mountain climbing because I have never done it. I wanted to say - wow! awesome goals you have set and I hope you hit your goal. Please keep us in the loop on how you are doing.

    Anyone hike in the rain?

I avoid it if I can. I don't like getting all wet and trying to hike - it slows me down and it's harder to walk, plus it gets dangerous. If I'm caught in the rain I usually will turn around and head back to where I started.

    Tips for newbies

Have you ever booked a campsite not knowing where it was? I would say a great tip for any new camper is to get a map of the campground. Ask what campsites are available (most maps have site #’s listed) and then pick the best site that you see. We did not know this when we first started...

    Coolers rummaged through

Have you ever had your cooler ripped into in the night? We left 2 coolers out last summer a couple of times when we went camping. The first time nothing happened – the second we woke up to noises and when we popped out of the camper the cooler was knocked over. It was only the pop and beer...

    Rude Hikers

It's hard to not pay attention to someone who is on the phone when you are hiking. Not only are they probably holding you up but they are missing a lot. I would have been annoyed too.
