Glad you weren't in need of rescuing Grandpa! The Spot is part of my essential gear.

    kodiak or copper canyon

I primarily use my 10x10 Kodiak when camping in SC. I use fans to help circulate air in the summer and it works great below 30 degrees. It is about 5 years old and still looks like new and most of the time it has been set up on barrier islands. Make sure that it s 100% dry before putting away...

Hammocks or Tents: pro and con

I prefer a tent, but I have fallen asleep in my hammock many times when the bugs weren't to bad. My gear is tent related, but you could always start experimenting with over quilts and under quilts for a hammock. Shug has some great YouTube videos about hammock camping year round.

    The Empty Chair

I'm so sorry about the absence of your little buddy. I imagine you might still hear a bark while fishing on occasion when you least expect it. He sure was handsome!

Recomend a backup external battery pack

The beauty of getting out-and-about is leaving the electronics at home!

    Hiking with dogs

I pick up after my dog unless she is wandering off with Refrigerator's dogs where they teach her proper trail etiquette. I carry a multitude of bags on trips, but as he mentioned....the poopoo isn't anywhere near the trail! His dogs wander way off for their morning/ afternoon constitutionals and...

    Mildewed tent

I wonder if setting it up outside for an extended period of time in the sun would help. Geez, what a shame.

    Taking Pets

Abby (my Avatar) is my old dog and has been the best companion on many trips. Like Grandpa's Lab, she is getting older, becoming deaf and blind, but there is no way that she would ever stay behind on a trip so we aren't backpacking these days. She enjoys the beach and chilling by a fire at...

Most Epic Tour You've Ever Had

Lordy, that would be actually meeting up with a group of folks in the mountains of West Virginia after driving through a snow storm and later having to move a small tree and some large rocks to get to the top of an old forest service road in my Camry above Smoke Hole. First, second and third...

    Hammock Camping

Grandpa, your neck of the woods definitely is not conducive to hammock camping. Shug, on you tube, has made a hobby of camping in all adverse conditions and his videos are pretty entertaining. Southerners usually already swing on a warm day relaxing in the shade so spending the night under a...

    Travel spices

You'd be surprised at the number of gourmet cooks that are out there hiking on the trails. One couple I know are serious chili cook off competitors and another grows and blends his own special chili pepper blend. To show up without something special in the spice department with this group would...

Trips already planned for the fall and I can't wait. I have been working too hard this summer!

    Water shoes - seriously?

I like hiking in my Keen sandals better than my hiking shoes when there are a lot of water crossings during the summer. They dry fast and have good support, plus the toes are covered.

    How big is your tent?

Before purchasing any of my tents I measured pads or air mattresses and allowed for moving around and gear stashing room. My 4 person REI Halfdome is comfortable for two, but would be like packed sardines to fit 4 into. My LightHeart Gear Solo is built so that my old dog has room inside along...

    Hammock Camping

Charley got me excited about hammock camping in the cooler weather when he made his own quilts and Shug's you tube videos are so entertaining that you almost have to try it. I have a double ENO that I take everywhere and have slept in it at least once each trip near a nice fire with an ocean...

    Travel spices

I have some little tubes that I purchased from a craft shop, but salt and pepper are from the cafeterias condiment section at work.
