    House hold items

This reminds me that I need to return my neighbor's shish kabob skewers. We used them on our last camping trip, not for a steak per se, but to steak down the tent. I couldn't find ours and we were running late to catch up with another group. Thanks for the reminder.

Most Epic Tour You've Ever Had

Mine would be my geology field camp in college. I lived in a tent in Durango, Colorado for two months then did a little touring. We went to the obvious places like the Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion. Hung out at Arches and mountain biked Slick Rock in Moab. Spent some time in Mesa Verde, also...

    Water shoes - seriously?

A friend of mine just finished the Appalachian Trail and said that he met some hikers that were wearing flip flops for the entire trail. That just spells disaster to me.

    Hammock Camping

I have seen hammocks that are like single sleeper tents - you just zip yourself right up in them if you want or you can leave the door open. It's another thing I haven't done yet, but would love to.

Can you make a fire without flint?

I have seen magnifying glass lenses woven into macrame necklaces around some kids' necks in my town recently. They looked more like hippie kids than survivalists, then I realized that they weren't using their necklaces to start camp fires. o.0

    Rain Forest

On the flip side, in Southern Oregon my in-laws have been challenged to finish painting because of all the fires, soot and terrible air quality. You're in a rain forest, and they're in an inferno! Yesterday and today are much better days than what it has been though. Good luck on your project...

    Return to Sedro Wooley, WA

For some reason, that gave me a vision that combined, "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest," with "Deliverance," - with the nuts turned loose and all. Were the locals aware of that part of their town's history?

    Flying Insects

Marigolds, also known as calendula, are effective too. Not only do they repel insects/mosquitos, but they add color and are edible. If you have a cat friend, keep an eye on it because marigolds may cause tummy problems for the feline.

    Talking To Yourself

I have often repeated prayers, poetry and sang devotional songs during my hikes and treks. Now that I am starting to hike again, this time with a baby who is ALWAYS with me, I find that my old habits not only help calm him down when he's getting antsy but also helps build my endurance.

    Carbon vs Stainless Steel?

Guess I never really thought about carbon versus steel. I've only had to use my knives for cleaning fish and cutting through ropes or twine. In retrospect, it looks like my default has been stainless.

    Take your trash with you!

Whether on the beach or on a hike, I have made a habit of picking up at least one piece of trash that is not mine. And then encourage who ever is with me to do the same.

    Blade on You?

I used to carry a Swiss Army knife - it had so many widgets that I never needed but not enough muscle. Lately I've been carrying a Gerber which is much heartier than what I had before.

    ATVs Still Legal?

Yes, they were the 3 wheeler kind. I knew a girl just a couple years younger than I who suffered permanent brain damage from an ATC accident. My brother and I were crazy kamikazi riders, with our share of catapults and over the handlebars catastrophes. We were also lucky, I guess. When my family...

    Camping With a Baby

@Grandpa, that picture made my heart jump! What a treasure. These are all great suggestions, thank you to all who have responded and especially taken the time to spell out details. @Ponderosa, part of my concern was nighttime dressing too. We have a couple sleep sacs that I haven't really put to...

    ATVs Still Legal?

A couple years ago while visiting my dad, I noticed one of our ATVs hadn't been repaired for some time. I asked him why it wasn't done, because that was out of the ordinary for him. My father said that the bike needed a part from the manufacturer and his mechanic told him that the part was no...

    Hauling Firewood With My ATV

I grew up with ATVs - they were called ATCs at the time. We started with two Honda 110's and then got a 250. We used those in the swamps and pinelands of Florida. When we built our house in Lake Placid we used the motorcycles to drag in coral rocks that we would find on some of our excursions...

    Beginner Trails in Southern Oregon

I have been off my mountain bike for a couple years and just now getting back to the sport. Next month we move to Southern Oregon. Any other mountain bike enthusiasts that can recommend some beginner trails in the area?

    Basic Safety Tips

I wish I could put up billboards, signs or use a megaphone....anything to let riders know that they too are traffic, a moving vehicle and that they need to travel in the direction of traffic as well. It irks me to no end when I see cyclists on the wrong side of the road. Okay, I've said my...

    Outdoor Arts and Crafts?

My sister and I would make dream catchers out of willow or soft maple branches. The string was usually hemp and for the single bead in the web. we would search for small rocks or shells with holes in them. Those kinds of rocks are easy to find near rivers and creeks.

    Hello From the Pacific Northwest

@Ponderosa, what are some of your favorite hikes on the Oregon Coast? Last summer I did some exploring and started mapping out a few choice spots for a quick reference.
