    Longest Hike

The military guys here are going to have the longest hikes records but that question really got me thinking. If hunting counts as hiking I guess the longest would have been in my youth. My dad would have us out dawn to dusk walking the rows for quail and other game. We also hunted rabbits with...

Fishing and camping trip gone wrong.

Nice work. At least you caught a good size canoe! :) Seriously, those scouts got a good lesson that day. Like ppine said, that "gotta get home" attitude can be a killer. There have been times for us out sailing when a mean squall rolled in and the best thing to do was turn toward it and ride it out.

    Shooting from the highway?

It's a bad idea for a lot of reasons. Can you imagine all the yahoos that would be driving up and down the roads shooting at everything if it were legal? Of course drive-by shootings of people are illegal too, but seems like there's still some of that going on in places.

    Wimped out

Total wimp here when it comes to the cold weather. Maybe that's why I fell in love with Florida. I do miss the mountains and the autumns, though. Today it's cold here, high of 69. :)

    Yearly Rant! Leafblowers

I really hate when they use them to clean the big parking lots. It blows the dust up and around and all over the place. Where can it land but right back on the pavement? If you're not going to use a dustpan, then you're just moving it around. And that dang racket is really annoying.

Worst day fishing not that bad

Good thing we caught fish. After a couple of productive hours on the water Sunday we had a dead battery. Hand cranking an outboard is not easy but we finally got it started. Then ran over an old crab trap that firmly lodged on the lower unit. Then I broke the boat hook trying to pry it off. Then...

    Sunday Snook in Charlotte Harbor

We went out on near Boca Grande for a few hours Sunday afternoon in my friends boat. Just behind the island we got 8 or 9 Snook in the 30" range and then 3 small red grouper in a row, all on live shrimp. Hopefully that's a good sign that the grouper stocks are making a comeback in our area. But...

Every camp kitchen needs a... ?

We alternate 2 ancient Coleman stoves. Got to have coffee and more coffee, please. I hate carrying the little propane bottles and the canned fuel, especially on the boat. But the hot meal is always welcome.

    Washing Dishes

We do more boat camping these days on an old 26' sail. The chore is lessened by paper and plastic for utensils when the type food allows it. For pans and cookware we do the 2 dishpan method with hot water. A drop of Dawn goes a long way.

    weekend chicker

Thanks Cappy. This is why I can only visit Louisiana for a few days at a time. If I stayed any longer I'd weigh 500 lbs. There is so much good food and so many great Cajun chefs that all I want to do there is eat! And they're never skimpy on the portions. :) I can almost smell that BBQ right...

    Weird rock on lovely walk

Great photos, Caver. It does look like a fossil but I have seen some strange rock formations caused by water. I've been a rock hound all my life and I'm always looking for that special fossil or semiprecious stone in the rough. Thanks for sharing your find.

Food - THat you would Have Never Eaten!!!

When we were kids my dad got some kind of deal on hundreds of old canned army rations. Every time we went on extended camping, hunting, or fishing trips we would eat these as side dishes to (you guessed it) spam. Somehow, the outdoors gives you an appetite for whatever there is. My gal makes...

How to get over a fear of heights

It varies for me. High mountains and cliffs are okay and I enjoy it. But tall buildings, no way. Driving over high bridges, okay, but not walking. I opted against zip-lining when I had the chance. Flying in airplanes I'm okay, but I am most religious during takeoffs and landings.

Just tossed this out for your general info...

Great idea on the candle powered space heater. I'm going to try this in the shed. I wonder if there is a better material than the clay pots for heat transfer? The emergency candles are a good idea, too. My grandpa used to recycle oil and showed us how to make a lamp with Crisco and a tuna can.

    fishermans trophy

I copied and pasted the url and it worked. The fish they're holding are Mahi-mahi (aka dolphin, dorado). It's a delicious game fish with good runs in the Florida Keys about May-July. We troll the brown floating weed patches a couple of miles offshore using ballyhoo. Fun to catch and my favorite...

    PETA Launches Drone Fleet

What the heck are they thinking? Really? I haven't duck hunted in years but it might be time to get out the old 870. I've never understood why PETA hates hunters so much. Hunters and sportsmen do more to preserve and protect America's wildlife than any other group.

    Holiday visitors

Thanks, guys, I complain too much. :) She's not rude per se, just over-helpful. A lot of time will be spent with the nieces (her grandkids) and her other daughter and friends. But get a bunch of the women in that clan together and it becomes a marathon yakking contest. I'm not allowed to go solo...

    Squirrel Stew

We used to hunt squirrels when I was a kid and my Aunt and Uncle them. They called it Burgoo, and it was a pretty good stew. Somewhere I heard you could get something similar to mad cow disease from eating squirrel brains. I'll stick to bacon. :)

    Holiday visitors

Well, I just learned mother-in-law is coming for a surprise visit on Halloween (how appropriate) and leaving about Thanksgiving (again, appropriate). I could swear the fish stop biting when she comes to town. And none of my buddies are up for an extended camping trip. :( At least I have this...

    Cappy's Cajun Countryboy Fishing Lessons

Thanks, Cappy, we love your videos. You might have to give up your sea job when Hollywood comes calling. :) In fact, you might get a cooking show and a fishing show. :) Seriously, keep up the good work, we look forward to the next one.
