Best places to photograph in the Carolinas

I'm preparing to go hiking at the end of the month, and I'm wondering if there are any other Carolinas hikers here. What are the prettiest places in your opinion? I just got a new camera and I'm dying to try it out.

    Coming across deer

There is one situation where I'm wary of deer--coming across a doe and her fawns. You don't mess with a mama and her babies. They'll trample a small animal to death.

    What Animals Do You See?

Heron, hawks, falcons, turkeys, rabbit, deer, raccoons, foxes, beavers, and lots and lots of snakes. On one occasion, a pack of wild dogs (thankfully, they were far away). South Carolina has plenty of sights to see in the mountains.

    be careful out there

Bear spray...I had no idea that was a thing. Thanks for the tip! I have yet to run into anything bigger than deer, but in the event that I did, I would be terrified. I know what I'm picking up before my next hike.

    Tiny houses

I think a tiny house is reasonable for one or two people, so long as you're comfortable living without certain luxuries. I'd definitely miss having a big kitchen and a big bathtub. I certainly wouldn't miss the steep property taxes and utility bills, though.

    Car camping

That's what a friend of ours suggested--putting the seats down and using an air mattress. It is kind of strange to me that there are rules for proper camping. To me, it shouldn't really matter, but it is what it is.

    Cooking Egg With Mud

That is crazy! It makes sense, though, there is a precedent for cooking things with mud in history. We made do in ancient times, makes sense that we can still use those methods now.

E-cigarettes used as a deadly weapon

That's a grim thought, but highly impractical. Like southerngal said, it's far easier to use an aerosol spray or infect the water supply. I'd be less worried about viruses and more worried about health risks that haven't been discovered yet.

    Car camping

Has anyone here gone car camping before? What are the pros and cons? It could save us on a tent, but I'm not sure what the protocol is, especially with camping sites.

    Potato soup recipe

Now that's interesting! I never would have thought to try a tomato broth with potatoes. The way my mother taught me to make potato soup was fairly simple. It isn't quite from scratch, but it gets the job done. -6-7 red potatoes, peeled and diced -1 can cream of herb -3-4 cups vegetable or...

    Good starter tents

Awesome advice for basic camping! Thanks. I'll make sure to pass it on. The tip about making sure he can set it up was amazing. I didn't even think of that.

    Tiny houses

To me, tiny houses have great appeal for two reasons--they're relatively easy to move, and they don't carry the same financial risks as buying a house. I think they're also a great idea if you have agoraphobia and you're trapped in your house. If the house is portable, and you can move that...

    Tiny houses

Now that's neat! I didn't realize there were specific codes involved. I'll have to look up this documentary, it certainly seems worth the time. My mother in law has voiced interest in looking into this and possibly purchasing one. It does seem like a very attractive option, especially in this...

    Good starter tents

Now that he's moved back into the area, my brother and his family have voiced interest in going camping. They're new to it, though, and they're not sure where to start as far as equipment. He wants to go all out with it, though. What would you all recommend as a good tent for a family of four?

Hammocks or Tents: pro and con

I can see where using a hammock would be a good idea, especially in milder weather. I've never tried it. I'll have to check this out and see if it would be a feasible option.

    Best sausage for gumbo...

My husband and I got into a debate recently about which kind of sausage is best for gumbo. He says any kind will do. I disagree--it's Andouille or not at all for me.

    Hiking on holidays?

Glad to know I'm not the only one who vacations in the "off" season. I can't deal with crowds, and I hate heavy traffic. I'd much rather spend a peaceful vacation somewhere on my own time.

Colorado woman found this under her porch

No cougars here locally, but I imagine it might be a problem for people who live further north. I'm not sure how I'd handle finding a cougar under my porch...

Do you prefer to go hiking alone or to always have someone with you?

It is nice to go on a solo hike. I would never attempt a longer, more challenging hike on my own, but I'm happy hiking around the woods close to my home. Solo walks and hikes are the best way for me to clear my head.

    Tiny houses

Has anyone else seen these? I think these are very similar to campers--it's very close to the same idea. There is a certain appeal. I don't think I could live in one all the time, but it is a nice idea.
