More than 400 cyclists turned out Saturday to mark the groundbreaking of a bike park that has been 14 years in the making.
Boulder voters approved a tax to fund the bike park in 1995.
On Saturday cyclocross racers looped around steep hills and sharp turns in a series of races to mark the start of construction on the park, located at the northwest corner of Valmont and Airport roads in eastern Boulder.
It will be at least a year, if not longer, before cyclists ride here again, but when they do, they`ll have a world-class, off-road cycling facility certified by the International Cycling Union. The facility will include BMX and mountain bike trails for all levels of ability.
The first phase of the project is estimated to cost $4.5 million.
Chris Moody, a Boulder pharmacy tech, rode out just to take a look at the site and the racers.
"It`s great that they`re getting this done," he said. "For years, this land just kind of sat here."
