My aching backside!

I went on vacation last week and we rode a lot of bike paths! I’m telling you my butt was so sore! Why can’t they make more comfy seats? I would say each day by the end of the ride I was practically standing up and peddling. We rode all over the beach (beach bikes) and on a lot of paths. The only problem with riding on the beach was we had to carry the bikes up over the rocks to get to the beach.

Ouch ~ but it sounds like it was loads of fun. I don't know why the bike makers can't make nicer seats. I agree with you in that they should! I don't ride a ton because they are just not comfy!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I bought a wider seat for my bike thinking that it would make it more comfortable, but it didn't help. I am sure there has to be something like that out there.

We guys have to be very careful which seat we use because it can cause some problems with the nerves in the....ah....male parts. If you don't ride regularly, you can get saddle sore or seat sore whichever form of riding you do.

We tried the gel seats. It was marginally better, but at the end of a long day of riding, our butts still hurt. I think next summer, we're going to have to try something different, but I'm not sure what.

I am guessing this is not something you head out and do every weekend? Remember everything in moderation, when you are not used to something is will hurt afterwards. I had that issue this week being silly walking around a mall for two hours shopping, never again!

These modern bike seats feel like sitting on a single-bit axe head padded with a doily!

I did get a gel seat cover which helps some. I guess I'm more of a walker than a rider...

I think they should make cold gel packs small enough for your butt like they make those adhesive heat strips. Stick them in your pants or a 'fanny pack'?!

It's all about conditioning, After a while it wears off and you won't notice it as much. I do use a gel cushion to make it easier, and I have read about nerve issues with men on those skinny little seats. I don't ride that much to be concerned though.

Just investigate. There are many, many types of bike seats out there. You will just have to experiment to find one that's comfortable to you. Then, as Grandpa says, you have to condition yourself. It's like any other activity you do.

As stated, the 'çommon sence' thing is to get used to it. just like ya can't jump up and run a marathon ya cant hop on a bike and do 100 miles. ya gotta train for it. When you was a kid it didn't matter cause ya rode a bike every where and ya but was tough and well seasoned and not only that ya were probally lots lighter then.

Thanks to modern technology good bike seats now come in a huge variety of styles, shapes and coverings. Just like a good pair of boots, the best thing is go to a bike shop and get fitted for a seat. Bring ya bike with ya and one of the skinny cyclist types behind the counter will gladly assist ya, and help ya choose a seat that fits ya tush comfortably.

To avoid pressure on ya more sensitive Male parts: raise ya handle bars up and tilt ya seat down slightly in front. This transfers ya weight further back onto less........... touchy areas.:tinysmile_fatgrin_t

Lastly remember its bike riding, ya know, fun, and so simple ya 8 year old can do it. Just use a lil common sence and have fun

My solution

For me I found a 3 wheeled recumbent to be like sitting on a lounge chair. I do rail trails and pull a camper behind me and am very comfortable. I tried a regular bike and had the same problems described here...no more:tinysmile_grin_t:

I've given up on riding bicycles through anything less on ideal roads. That limits me to my own neighborhood and just a short ride on my old-fashioned bicycle.
