I could not imagine what this guy is going through. As a mother I doubt I would even attempt to camp with the kids without another adult to help out, kids can get out of your sight in no time.

I just read a story about a 12 year old who drowned on the Merrimack River in Missouri on Sunday. They recovered his body 6 miles downstream on Tuesday. Another tradgedy that could have probably been prevented if the boy had been wearing a life Jacket. I'm saddened each time I hear of this happening. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these youngsters. Please people, do not underestimate the power of the river no matter how strong a swimmer you are, no matter how calm the river seems to be, no matter how well you think you know the river. Always wear a proper fitting PFD when you are on or near any body of water.

I do not understand the lack of jackets either but as a parent that seriously hit home. I remember years ago we had an issue with my sisters middle child, decided to jump directly into the deep end of our pool. Every parent flipped out within second and before you knew it a dozen people were in the water diving for her (niece). No jacket, no floaties but she wanted to be a "big kid" and thought that would work. Scared us all, multiple mini heart attack central.

Very sad indeed. I can't imagine only being able to save 1 child. This man is going to have nightmares for years! I do agree that life jackets are the way to go. We don't wear them in our pool at home, but we do everywhere else.
