Freshwater Trout Of The Western United States.

There are several different types of Trout that you can find in the 11 Western States. Each of them are a little different, and they are fish that can be individual too in how to catch them

Brown Trout Species- The fish that is know as Brown Trout, also known as Salmo Trutta, are fish that can deal with water that is a little warmer than their other trout brethren. In many areas that formerly featured Brook Trout, they have been replaced slowly by the Brown Trout. It is a stealthy fish, that is a lot harder to catch than other fish.

It is precisely because of this that it has survived in some of the places that have been over fished. Because it is a wary fish and harder to catch it has helped ensure its longevity. The Brown Trout looks for lots of cover and slack or quiet water.

Under cuts in the bank, logs, brush and trees are some of the favorite hiding places for Brown Trout. As they get bigger they begin to get even more stealthy, and they will come out only at night in many areas to feed.

Browns tend to seek flesh food, insects, crustaceans, minnows, and worms. They also will often raise well to a wet fly if fished correctly. A wet fly mimics the baitfish and their natural food so its often successful when fishing for Brown Trout.

Cutthroat Trout- These are trout that are often found in the streams and rivers in the mountains in the west, the ones that drain to the Pacific Ocean. They will rise often to lures and bait as well as various flies. They prefer minnows, insects and are often found in fast moving waters. Fly Fishing can be successful with Cutthroat Trout especially when they are in the cold streams and rivers found in the Western United States.

Brook Specie Trout- Also known by their scientific name, Salvelinus Fontinalis, they are found in water that doesn’t normally rise over 67 or 68 degrees. As the water grows more warm many areas find that the brook trout population for whatever reason plummets.

Their favorite food is other small fish, mollusks, minnows and worms. They are often the easiest to catch and they are found in gravel bottom streams, with ponds cover and rocks. They often will congregate near waterfall ponds and can be taken with either a wet or dry fly, or a bait such as salmon eggs.

Lake Trout- Cold and Deep, these trout are the true masters of deep water that is cold. It is also known as salmon trout, and it feeds on nearly any kind of flesh that it can find. Eels, smelt, minnows and insects, as well as nearly all kinds of fish smaller than itself. It can be caught successfully on Worms and salmon eggs across most of the waters in its varied habitat.
