How to Camp in the Winter
Many people think that camping can only be done when the weather is warm. The only exception could be during fall, when the weather is chillier, but still warm enough to do the things most commonly associated with camping. However, this is a false perception. Camping can be enjoyed during the winter just as it can be during other times of the year. In fact, when people camp in the winter, they getting an experience that offers much more uniqueness than what is available during warmer seasons, since camping done during these time periods is much more ‘typical.’ The only issue involved with camping in the winter is making sure one is thoroughly prepared so they can stay warm and still have fun. This article will provide some tips on what a person should keep in mind when planning a winter camping trip.
First, campers will need to make sure they are dressing appropriately before going winter camping. And the secret to dressing in cold weather is not wearing one piece of really bulky apparel, but rather dressing in layers. This can be done through thermals, which would be worn underneath one’s regular outfit. Then of course there is the coat, which should be more sporty in nature, such as the types of coats worn during skiing and other winter-associated activities. Other things that should be worn include a hat or a face mask and mittens. As far as shoes, boots are preferable, since they cover part of the leg and are very durable in the snow.
Next, campers need to get together their camping gear. They will need to have a camping stove for cooking and double the amount of matches for making a fire. But most importantly, they will need a very warm sleeping bag. The best ones for winter camping are those that contain a hood. This is because when the head is kept warm, it is much easier for the whole body to heat up as well. However, even with good sleeping bags, extra blankets need to be taken just in case a person is still cold.
Lastly, a person will need to decide on the type of shelter they are going to use for their winter camping adventure. Most campgrounds will offer cabins for winter camping, but some campers may prefer to pitch a tent anyway. This is 100 percent possible even in the snow, just as long as there is an indication from the tent’s manufacturers that it can be used for winter camping. Before the tent is pitched, the ground must be cleared of any snow lying around. If this is not done then the tent needs to be placed on tarp, so the campers will not be sleeping directly on the snow. Otherwise, campers’ body heat would melt the snow, making their winter camping experience wet and unsatisfactory. Of course, if a person wants to truly feel the experience of winter camping, they can build a snow shelter over using a tent. With a snow shelter, the snow itself serves as the insulator, similar to how an igloo works.
