Default Blue Gill

Does anyone besides me love, love, love blue gill. They also call them "sun fish" where I live because they have the little "sun" in front of their tail. It takes a lot of them to make a meal but the little fellows are delicious.

Bluegill, Brim, or Bream are delicious and provide a lot of action and are very powerful swimmers. They are called Sunfish but this includes other varieties like the Warmouth, Redeared Sunfish, Rock Bass, Pumpkinseed, Green Sunfish and, believe it or not, the Smallmouth and Largemouth Black Bass. All are Sunfish.

The biggest Bluegill I ever caught weighed 3 pounds but most, as you say, are much smaller and average 6 to 7 inches as keepers. They are easy to fillet and a package of fifty fillets will easily feed a family of four. Unless I have at least ten such packages in the freezer by Winter, I didn't fish enough.

Where do you buy them Dinosaur? I would love to have some since I've gone through my stash in the freezer. I love my bluegill dipped and fried with a big ol' dish full of onion rings and fries on the side. I caught a lot last year but we have gone through them.

They are quite fun to catch. I like to fish for them in the spring time along shore. The fight like they are so much bigger than they are!

LOL as you can tell from my handle- these are my favorites.

There is a lake in WV where I can catch bream around the end of May as big as my hand on every cast. I use a flyrod and a sponge rubber rubber legged spider. My brother an i between us have caught and released over 300 fish ibn one day and kept around 100 to filet.
