Dolly Varden Every time I see that name, I chuckle: it was the name of one of the distant cousins in Laura Ingalls Wilder's book, Little House in the Big Woods. Anyways, it's a type of char, and one type or sub-species is specific to the Northwest. A salmonid, it's got a much denser meat than a 'regular' trout, it's more a cross between a salmon and a trout. If I'm goin' lake fishing, I want me some of these critters on my line! Dolly Varden trout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They are the BEST! I lived in the Aleutians for three years and on the coast of Washington for another 6 years. They are my favorite fish to eat. I live in Idaho now, and they don't occur here.

I'm familiar with steelhead, but not that specific char. As a salmonid, I'm guessing it would be a good 'fight' to land? Any specific gear required?
