The river monster that's also a dinosaur British Columbia is 5 times the size of California; Vancouver Island IS the size of California. It's home to a river named the Fraser River, and it's a river of 1000 miles (give or take) that runs through 2/3 of the mainland province. For all but one year of my life, I've lived within a few miles of that river, no matter if it was in the northern half or the southern half of B.C.. The TV show, RIVER MONSTERS, highlighted a fact that most folks don't know: the mighty Fraser is home to a prehistoric water creature, one I've seen crest in the river's waters: sturgeon. Sturgeon Fishing Page A century ago, these behemoths' were caught and measured at 22 feet and more; even a 'small' one of 9-10 feet is 400+ lbs to try and reel in and land. Efforts are being made to ensure the survival of the sturgeon in the Fraser River. It's a "working river", especially near the delta-exit to the sea, and the sturgeon has been threatened as a result of pollution and the like. If you ever want a neat experience, check out a fishing lodge in southern BC that offers sturgeon fishing: you aren't likely to regret it.

Wow, I have to say I didn't know that ancient Sturgeon were even more giant than today. Sounds like a great place. Thanks, for the great link!

Sturgeon spearing season is about to begin here. A hole is cut in the ice (big rectangular hole). They sit in shacks and use home made decoys (up to about 16 inches long) to lure the sturgeon up to the hole, where they are speared. It's a huge thing here. Not for me personally, but it draws quite a crowd.

Er - sturgeon, or surgeon, dinosaur? Would you believe I actually know someone named "Spurgeon"! It's all I can do not to laugh - I can never call him by his name.
