Default Snapping Turtle!

I was fishing this weekend and I almost stepped on a snapping turtle! I am so glad I caught myself and backed away slowly. Once those things bite you it's all over, well for the turtle.

Yeah, once a snapping turtle bites down getting him to let you go is near impossible. Sometimes they really do have to chop the things head off to get it off of you!

True, You have to kill the turtle or break its' jaw which is tantamount to killing it anyway. They are quite delicious though.

Wow, I've never heard of snapping turtle. I have always known turtles to be timid and withdrawn. I better go check with uncle Google to find out how they look like. I certainly do not want to get snapped by any of them.

I have heard stories about them but never met anyone that ran into one. There are all types off critters around and a turtle is not the first thing I would think of either. Maybe a bear or a wild cat but not a little turtle.

Little? Well, they are smaller than a man but I've seen them at 65 pounds. Look it up. While you're at it, check out the Soft Shell (Leatherback). It gets pretty big also. And it's fast and aggresive.

Holy cow! I'm certainly glad you looked down prior to getting that shock of your life. I can't imagine a snapping turtle biting me! I've seen some pretty big ones.

I can't imagine eating one though! Man dino- you eat some weird stuff!

They are delicious! My mother in law showed me how to cut one up when I was a young bride and we have had many turtle meals. Turtle is pretty good once you get past the thought. Just think, the aborigines have been eating cats for some time now, since the cats were decimating their natural food sources so they started eating the cats. I don't think I could but to each his own. I guess I'm too used to a cat being a pet.

Cats? Cougar meat is delicous. Never had turtle but wouldn't hesitate to try it. When I hear people talk about eating exotics, only insects give me second thought.

Lots of snappers around here. Not the massive manhole cover sized snappers you can get down south but we might have more of them. I have seen them walking on the street during egg laying time. It is also somewhat common have one follow my canoe around when I'm fishing because they learn that small boats throw back dazed and injured fish. I picked one up once that was probably 25lb to get it off the road and was actually shocked by the force of its jaws snapping at my arm. Sounded like a freakin steel trap and I almost had to change my pants. Didn't get bitten but won't do that again!
