Coz,
I heard Alan Jackson refer to his Dad as Daddy Gene, which is obviously a southern expression. I liked it and started to refer to my Dad that way. I call him Pop too kind of after the Ozzie and Hariette Show.

My husband "taught" me I guess, but I think you learn more when you fire it yourself. My daddy didn't think guns were for girls, and yet he is proud to know I carry concealed to protect myself and his grandkids...

We had a rifle range at the summer camp I went to as a kid each year. From there it was learning to skeet shoot with friends, shooting a pistol with my girlfriends at a range, and finally out of necessity learning to hunt deer. Socializing led to dove shoots.

I guess it was kind of a combination of people who taught me how to shoot. My Dad showed me how to load, point, and clean a rifle, but never did let me fire it. My husband, taught me how to fire a rifle, and the instructor for my Private Investigator training taught me how to fire a handgun.

Hi...

Around here, the shooting "range" was our backyard...or our neighbors' back yards...or our neighbors' woods. It was quite normal. Nobody cared.

No more, though. Houses and newcomers in these areas now.

My dad wasn't all that interested in guns, but he believed that everyone ought to know how to handle them safely. Him and my grandad both were absolute bears for firearms safety. I still flinch inside a little when the muzzle of even a toy gun covers me.

I've had exactly one accidental discharge in my life, and good safety training had the muzzle downrange and made it only a scary moment rather than a potential tragedy.

My Dad taught me the basics, gave me my first gun and a thousand rounds of ammunition, after which I became quite proficient on my own.

This all happened a few years after Dad taught me how to fish. God bles him. I've always found a way to eat.

That's exactly what we are trying to do for our kids Dino. We have been fishing everyday this week, and just as soon as the kids are a little older we will be taking them hunting as well. My husband is teaching my three year old little girl to shoot with her very own Red Ryder BB gun. We may get her a pink .22 for Christmas.
