Default Hunting With Dad

When we were kids, my brother and I often went hunting with my dad. Often we'd walk and walk through all kinds of fields, and he'd talk to us about what to look for and where certain birds or small animals might hide. We rarely actually hunted anything, but those were some of the best "hunting" experiences of my life.

Hi...

I think you've been very fortunate to have a dad so attuned to nature, and to share that wisdom with you.

I first got out of school to go deer hunting in the third grade. We slept in the old Baker tent on a bed of straw. Those experiences taught me that an outdoor career was the path to take.

I have fond memories of the people that we met on hunting trips. Old-timers dressed in overalls with black and red checked shirts, chewing tobacco, and drinking coffee by the old wood stove. I learned early that I liked those types of people better than the surbanites I was raised with

Hi...

The last high school I attended was a very small one (twelve seniors). The first day of dear season, the boys didn't need any excuses for their absence.

And, some of the World Series Ball Games would be piped into our classrooms...!! As you can probably guess, our school had some very lenient rules.

Keep honking. I'm reloading.

Our school gave an excused absence the opening day of deer season with a note from parents that we were hunting. Seventh grade, opening day, 4 boys and 6 girls out of a class of 60 plus students were in school. And yes, we had a radio in class to listen to world series. Our school was too old to have piped speakers. Actually, the school wasn't that old, it's just that I am.

It was a common sight to see a student walk into the high school with a rifle or shotgun and a backpack and go to the office to check them in for the day because he was riding the bus home with a friend at the end of the day to go hunting.

Hi...

Boy...!! Try doing that now...!!

I don't remember any firearms being brought into the school(s) I attended, but every boy had a pocketknife..and I believe that sometimes hunting knives were also worn on the belt.

Some footwear we wore ("hi-tops") actually had a knife pocket built into it, near the top of the boot.
