Default New hunting rifle!!

We finally got our new hunting rifle. We got a Marlin 336w 30-30. I haven't gotten to go out and shoot it with the hubby yet, but I am itching to go. I think we finally have everything we need for hunting next season.

Congratulations! My first real rifle was a Winchester 94 that came from a police auction. I used carry a Marlin .444 a lot in bear country until I got something better; namely a Model 71 Winchester in .348.

A .30-30 is probably the most popular cartridge in the Western Hemispere and quite adequate for lots of game animals at minimal yardage and with well placed shots. Native Alaskans have hunted everything from caribou to moose with it for years.

I'm not up to date now but I always preferred the Marlin 336 to the Winchester 94. Maybe because my old winchester was an 1894 carbine that had probably a zillion shots through it. I sure wasn't consistent with it. Congrats on the Marlin. You should really enjoy it.

Biggest advantage I can see in the Marlin over the Winchester is the Marlin has side ejection and it's easier to mount a scope. I like lever actions. They are reliable and sturdy, although perhaps not quite as accurate as a bolt action.

They are certainly capable of minute-of-deer accuracy.

My favorite lever action is a Savage 99 in 250-3000 Savage with the rotary magazine. Prices for these are out of sight nowadays. I've been trying to deal a friend of mine out of his for years but he's successfully resisted my offers so far.

Neighbor had one. Tried to talk him out of it too. That 250 was a might fine mid caliber. I've still got a pre '64 Winchester 88 in .308. The pre 64's were a good gun too, but the later stamped ones weren't.

Oohhhhhh........Ahhhhhhh!!
I have one of those and a 99 in 300 Savage also, they are great hunting rifles!!
250-3000 was a realy great cartrige, one of the first commercial cartriges to break that "magical" 3000FPS barrier. Really cool gun and cartrige!!
The 336 is a old tried and true rifle (along with the Model 94) and should give you years of faithful service.
A good gunsmith familiar with the 336 could really slick up that action for you in a couple of hours, all mile are smooth as silk.
