Default Semi Automatic Rifles

I am just wondering if it is still legal in most places to own a semi automatic gun and also what sort of registration a person needs to own a gun like that. Anyone know?

Firearm laws vary state-to-state so that's something you will have to find out for yourself. In TN, all you need to do is pass the background check to own a firearm. If you want to carry it with you in public, you need to take carry permit class and get the carry permit.

I'm from Indiana. Semi-autos are all legal here. I just don't think they are necessary in anything except small calibers. I own a Ruger 10/22 that I customized with a reworked stock, a target barrel and a variable 50mm scope. It's a terrific squirrel gun. For larger game I have a .303 and a .308. Both are bolt action clip fed. If you need to fire more than once with these calibers, the odds are you just need some more time at the range.

There is nowhere in the U.S. where semi-autos are illegal. Some municipalities regulate or prohibit their sale, but possession is generally understood to be protected. I live in Wisconsin, and there are really no restrictions here, just the federal background check. Open public carry is legal, but likely to draw lots of negative attention in the wrong places. There's allot of misinformation and fear running around out there, but there is no serious organized effort to outlaw these weapons, given the constitution and courts history on these issues. My guess would be that we might see some heavier regulation on these weapons in the southwest at some point in an effort to cut off the flow of battle-rifles to Mexican cartels.

When the riots start, martial law will be enacted. Under martial law, if you aren't a member of law enforcement or the military, and you've got a loaded carbine, you'll likely be dead in short order (probably while trying to load your second magazine). Wishing for war has got to be the worst kind of stupid there is.

greensteelforge, MR"T" isn't wishing for war, he's wishing for action. Let's hope he doesn't live long enough to see it. Of course, if he does, it will change his mind.

As long as you stay on your own property (martial law or not) you should be ok (remember that pesky 2nd amendment). As far as advocating war, one
should first participate in one. I have a right foot with a hole in it that a sniper put there in 1968 that surely would vote no on the war thing.

Browning has made the BAR, for many years as a semi automatic hunting rifle. This is not a combat weapon. It is made specifically for hunting. Many other manufacturers (Benelli, Remington, Winchester etc.) have similar models. Semi auto shotguns have been favorites of duck and goose hunters for years. Most states regulate hunting rifles based on magazine capacity and minimum caliber. Check your local hunting regulations. Registration for any firearm may be required my the state or city you live in. Mine does not require it. Only the standard background check. If you are looking for a combat rifle...well that is a whole different conversation.

Sorry about the hole in your foot, trex1310. I have a fair idea where you were when you got it. Being a sniper myself, I'm sorry I wasn't there before he got to you.

The thing is we need people who are full of piss and vinegar. But they all need training so they know what it's like to have someone shooting at them. They have to know what it's like to be scared and do what you have to do anyway. I don't think these kids understand it. Having a great big nasty weapon won't do you much good when there's a hole in your forehead. That was my specialty. Big guns can't be used when there's no one to man them.

Most of what you see here is false bravado or stupidity. War sucks. Then you come back and the V.A. screws you over for the rest of your life. I think some of my ancestors fought for the union during the Civil War. There is every possibility they made a mistake.
