Default Whet stone

Have I just been unlucky or is it really hard to find a whet stone to sharpen knives these days? I have been looking for awhile and none of our local stores carry them.

They are getting harder to find, I would suggest checking with a butcher supply shop, the cutters should still be using them.

Try a diamond stone from Home Depot or Lowes.
Other than that do like I do and flea market it.
I think eBay also.

Any good sporting goods store should have them. I did a quick search and there are many websites of manufacturers who will either sell them or give you a dealer list.

Amazon.com: arkansas whetstone

Just search the Amazon or go to other online shops, there is plenty of offers. But if you're a beginner in sharpening you may want to consider some sharpening kit instead like Spyderco Sharpmaker Kit.
