Lamebeaver, some areas require shotguns rather than rifles to keep the shot shorter ranged. Even remote Idaho has a couple of hunting units requiring shotguns, particularly on the Snake River plain where a rifle bullet can travel so far. |
I grew up in one of those areas (Southern Michigan).
I don't quite get the idea of going to a more open choke to increase background safety. I think scattering shot more actually increases the risk.
My thought in choosing full choke is that you generally can't always anticipate the range you'll be shooting at, and you're shooting at a relatively large target.
