Climate has a lot to do with it. Antlers will last much longer in arid climates. Porcupine will gnaw them away very quickly, also.

Three reasons

mice have already been mentioned
they're hard to see
they are usually lost in areas where deer/elk yard up for the winter, which is often in thick cover (which makes them even harder to see)

Found a moose antler once, that was pretty cool. Makes a nice centerpiece on the dining room table.
