Default Red fox

I've seen 2 red fox in our yard for the past week. They are scaring our dog, she barks all the time. I'm also afraid to let the cats outside. How can we get rid of these - are they legal to shoot?

Hi...

I can't answer your question in full, as NY now has some "seasons" on some varments. Either way, a hunting license would be required to legaly shoot one. You also are required to be X-distance from the nearest dwelling or road, also (don't think it applies to your own home, though).

Phrase for use when traveling through hostile regions of the Persian Gulf:

"Maternier ghermes ahleih, ghorban".

(The red blindfold would be lovely, excellency).

PS: Their fur may also be of value.

Out here there are two rules when being pestered by a varmit.
1. Obey the laws
2. SSS rule (shoot, shovel, shutup)
Most times rule number 1 is adequate. Sometimes rule #2 has to be employed.

Dept. of Fish and Game wants to lay claim to the critters but they don't always want to be responsible for them.

Foxes rarely attack dogs and cats. No need to kill it, just let it be.

I really like foxes. In Wyoming I used to see them almost every day when working in the field. How about a good fence and living with them? I am surprised everyone wants to shoot them. The population of red fox in the US has been greatly reduced in the last 25 years or so. They are important in reducing the population of rodents. They occupy a similar niche to coyotes.

If fencing doesn't work, I have been successful in discouraging coyotes with a hand held spot light (mil candlepower), and a compressed air horn like boaters use.

People who complain about squirrels and rabbits are sometimes the first to want to shoot predators.

I like foxes too. Beautiful animals but very shy.

Don't see them much around here anymore. I think the coyote population explosion has something to do with it.

Fox are preferable to coyotes. They stay out of the barnyard, they are safe. They get too close I have to assume mama fox intends feeding the kits chicken for dinner. That's my chicken dinner, not theirs. I didn't go to the trouble of raising those chickens for the privilege of seing them eat my chicken dinner. If something has to die, it won't be my chicken until it's time for me to eat it. Now, you can call me anything you like, as long as it's not late for my chicken dinner.

I completely agree with this. In most rural areas where I have lived, this is the way it goes. If you live in a more urban area, you're probably going to need to make some phones calls to find out what the protocol is.

Grandpa, you are my go to guy. SSS is exactly what my dad would have done when I was a kid. However, if campclose doesn't want to harm the foxes, call the local game warden or forest ranger and see if they couldn't trap them and take them to another place.
