What would be the best hand made basecamp type of structure that can be warm and cozy for a winter type environment. I recently saw a survivalist trying to test a Yurt type of shelter and it was an interesting watch.

Yurt definately gets my vote, wanted one for years.
Hi-wall tents are good as long as the weather does not turn windy.

OK, my apartment looks worse when compared to the inside of that Yurt in the picture. I love these shelters, easy to maintain, set up but not as easy to transport though.

We had a visit from the Mongolians in Elko one year for poetry. They call a yurt a ger and had a traditional one set up for our inspection. It is a great winter shelter. Large canvas tents with wood frames, doors and a wooden floor are also very satisfactory and have been used for hundreds of years in North America. Do not discount a Plains style tipi with a winter liner either. Other native shelters like longhouses, wikiups, and earth lodges work fine. If I was in North Dakota, I would go with the earth lodge like the ones the Mandans used to house Lewis and Clark for the winter on the Missouri.
