| Thanks Grandpa, As I read this post and other"äxe" related post I have come to realize ya right on. It definately is a regional thing. As far as shelters go we can build a palmetto lean to water proof with sides and open front. Add a moss floor aND YA GOT comphy shelter put up in about an hour, with a cane knife. As far as fire wood, fires aint for keepin ya from freezin to death. They are for smoke to chase away skeeters, and heat for cooking. Cajuns refer to a hat full of fire meaning a camp fire about a foot in diamater. One that generates just enough coals for cooking. I have been on many a week long camping trip, had fire going almost all day, and never needed an axe, or much more than half a cord of gathered wood to keep it going. After watchin'that mountain man show yesturday I realize why you yankees are so keen on an axe. Them folks hadda pile up mountains of fire wood to make it through the winter. We dont run a heater but for a week or 2 all winter.
