| Kid's backyard campout My kids really want to go camping but they've never been. I told them I'd rather they sleep in a tent in our backyard to give it a try first. We live in the middle of nowhere anyhow. How old do you think kids should be before you leave them unattended in a tent overnight in the backyard? | ||||||||

| I was maybe 6 or 7 when I first did back yard camping. Not saying we were not checked in on, as I don't really remember if we were or not, and the parents were most likely sneaky about it. | ||||||||

| Six or seven sounds about right. You might want to have some comforting hot chocolate or some other treat handy if they can't quite make it through the night... | ||||||||

| I have a six year old who camped out in our backyard with friends just last weekend. I checked on them pretty regularly. Actually, my wife and I took shifts. Everything was fine until it started to rain and the girls had to come running and screaming into the house. It was a memorable evening. | ||||||||

| I would say they should be a little older, about 8 or 9, but it depends on how safe you think tor area is | ||||||||

| Even at age 8 they would still need frequent checks to be sure that they were safe. | ||||||||

| Why not camp with them in the backyard...with separate tents...that way you could keep an eye on them and still let them gain the experience... | ||||||||

| I think thats what we did as kids too, but parents had one tent and we had another. Even when we did get older (before the years of sneaking out of the house that is), we still were checked in on at random times. Maybe most parents take shifts? | ||||||||

| We had a screened-in porch in the backyard, near where we pitched our tent. My father unrolled a sleeping bag there so he could hear if we needed help sometime during the night. It was a very good idea, but he kind of gave himself away when he began to snore. | ||||||||

| My kids are 7 and 9, but both very mature for their ages. I think if we decide to let them do it we'll put a baby monitor in the tent so I can hear anything that I might need to. My husband will sleep right through everything... lol Thanks for the help! | ||||||||
